Improve fruit quality has been a major goal in plant breeding. Direct approaches to address the nature of the fruit quality specifically related to consumer preferences and environmentally friendly, such as improved taste, the compound nutraceutical, and sustainability, has slowly been added to the priority list of farmers that already includes characteristics such as productivity, efficiency, and, especially , pest and disease control. Breeders already using the tools of molecular genetics to improve the quality of the fruit although most progress has been made in the producers and industry quality standards.
In addition, progress has largely been limited to simple agronomic traits easily observed, whereas most quality attributes, in particular with regard to flavor and nutrition, is very complex and has largely been ignored. Fortunately, the wild germplasm, which is used to fight against / tolerance to environmental stress (including pathogens), are still available and harbor significant genetic variation for flavor and health-promoting properties. Similarly, heritage / traditional varieties may be used to identify genes contributing to the taste and quality of health and, at the same time, serves as a good source of best allele for improved organoleptic qualities.
Grape (Vitis vinifera L.) and tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) produce fleshy, berry-type fruits, among the most consumed in the world. Both have undergone important domestication and selection process, which has dramatically reduced their genetic variability, and the properties of the fruit is very standard. In addition, more and more consumers are asking for sustainable production, according to various chemical inputs. In this paper, we review the genetic resources available to tomato / wine farmers, and the latest technological advances that facilitate the identification of genes / alleles of interest in the gene pool of natural variability or produced.
Including omics technologies, high-throughput phenotyping / phenomics, and biotech approaches. Our review also includes a variety of technology used to transfer them to the tomato and grape allele considered appealing to the quality of the fruit. These include traditional breeding, TILLING (Targeting Induced Local Lesions in Genomes), genetic engineering, or PBT (New Plant Breeding Technologies). Overall, the joint exploitation of genetic variability and innovative biotechnology tools can facilitate farmers to improve fruit quality standards take into account the connection more consumers and the need to progress to a more sustainable agricultural practices.

Description: CRK, also known as p38, is a protein that in humans is encoded by the CRK gene. This gene is a member of an adapter protein family that binds to several tyrosine-phosphorylated proteins. It is mapped to 17p13.3. The protein participates in the Reelin signaling cascade downstream of DAB1. The product of this gene has several SH2 and SH3 domains (src-homology domains) and is involved in several signaling pathways, recruiting cytoplasmic proteins in the vicinity of tyrosine kinase through SH2-phosphotyrosine interaction. The N-terminal SH2 domain of Crk functions as a positive regulator of transformation whereas the C-terminal SH3 domain functions as a negative regulator of transformation. Two alternative transcripts encoding different isoforms with distinct biological activity have been described. |
